How much does a Virginia state inspection cost, and how long does it take?

The Virginia inspection fee is capped by law at $20 for passenger vehicles, and the inspection itself takes about 45 to 90 minutes at the station. What the fee covers, what it doesn't, and where the real cost hides.

Short answerA Virginia safety inspection costs $20 for a car, SUV, pickup, or trailer, and $12 for a motorcycle. The price is set by state law, so every licensed station charges the same. The inspection itself takes roughly 45 to 90 minutes once the car is in the bay; the wait to get into the bay is the part nobody can predict.

How much does a Virginia inspection cost?

Virginia Code § 46.2-1167 fixes the maximum inspection charge:

A station cannot legally charge more than that for the inspection itself. A small slice of each fee (70 cents on a $20 inspection) goes to the Virginia State Police, which runs the program.

What does the $20 actually cover?

The inspection, the sticker, and nothing else. It does not include any repair, any part, or any "inspection prep." If a station quotes you a higher number for the inspection alone, ask what the extra is for; it is either work you are free to decline or a charge that isn't allowed.

What does a reinspection cost?

If the car fails, you get a rejection sticker that is valid for 15 days. Bring the car back to the same station inside that window and the reinspection only covers the items that failed. By regulation the station may charge at most $1 for it, and you are entitled to up to two reinspections on one rejection sticker.

Go to a different station, or come back after the 15 days, and it counts as a brand-new inspection at the full fee.

How long does a Virginia inspection take?

Two different clocks:

• In the bay: about 45 to 90 minutes. The inspector works through a fixed checklist (brakes, lights, steering, suspension, tires, glass, wipers, exhaust, horn, seat belts, fuel system, and so on) and it does not get faster because the car is new.
• Waiting for the bay: anywhere from zero to several hours. Most stations run first come, first served, and demand piles up in the last week of every month because stickers expire on the last day of the month printed on them.

If you drop the car and leave, add the round trip and whatever you do in between. If you wait, the whole errand is usually a half day.

How often do I need one?

Every 12 months. The sticker shows the month it expires, and the car is due by the last day of that month.

Where the real cost hides

The $20 is the cheap part. The expensive part is the conversation after the inspection, when the station hands you a list that mixes items that actually failed the state standard with items it would like to sell you.
