Expired inspection sticker in Richmond: what to do this week

An expired Virginia inspection sticker is a ticketable offense. Here is how to get legal again fast in Richmond, and how to keep it from happening next year.

It happens to careful people constantly. The sticker's month arrives while you're busy, and now every drive to work is a small gamble.

Here is the situation, and the fastest way out of it.

What you're actually risking

Under Virginia Code § 46.2-1157, every day a car is driven or parked on a public road without a valid inspection is a separate offense. There is no grace period: the sticker is valid through the last day of the month shown and expired the next morning.

One detail most people get wrong: since 2021, an officer cannot pull you over solely for an expired sticker until the first day of the fourth month after it expired. That is not a grace period. If you are stopped for anything else, the expired sticker can be added to the ticket from day one, and once the fourth month arrives the sticker alone is grounds for a stop. The ticket also doesn't fix the underlying problem: you still need the inspection.

The fastest way to get legal in Richmond

1. Go early, go mid-week. Any licensed station can inspect you. Lines are shortest at opening time, Tuesday through Thursday.
2. Expect month-end crowds. If your sticker just expired, you're in the same boat as everyone else whose month rolled over. The first week of the new month is busy with stragglers.
