How does a Virginia inspection work?

Every registered vehicle in Virginia needs a safety inspection every 12 months at a station licensed by the Virginia State Police. The fee is capped at $20. The inspector checks a fixed list (brakes, lights, steering, suspension, tires, glass, wipers, exhaust, horn, belts, fuel system) and either applies a new sticker or a 15-day rejection sticker with a written list of what failed. The full process is on our Virginia vehicle inspection service page.

Where do Richmond drivers usually get inspected?

Dealer service departments, the national tire and service chains along West Broad Street and Midlothian Turnpike, and dozens of independent garages across the city. All charge the same $20 for the inspection; what differs is the wait, the labor rate on any repair, and how hard the service desk pushes the recommendation list. Stickers expire on the last day of the month, so every station in Richmond is slammed in the final week. Our guide to where to get a state inspection in Richmond compares the options honestly.

Why outsource the trip?

Because the trip is the whole cost. The inspection is $20 and an hour in the bay; the errand is a morning, a ride home or a lobby chair, and a decision at the counter about repairs you can't evaluate. Brake Spoon takes the morning and the counter off your plate and leaves you the decision, made from your phone with the two lists separated.

How does pickup work in Richmond?

Book a day and a morning or midday window online. Your driver arrives, photographs the car from every side, and takes the keys by hand or from a lockbox. Pickup can be at home in the Fan or Church Hill, or at your office downtown or in Scott's Addition, and the return can be either. You track the trip live.

What happens after pickup?

The car goes to a licensed station we've vetted. If it passes, you get a message and the car comes back with its new sticker. If it fails, the station's findings come to Brake Spoon first; we sort them into items that failed the published standard, each with the rule cited, and items the shop merely recommends, and send you the list at the shop's exact price to approve or decline line by line.

What if it fails?

Approve the repair and the station fixes and reinspects the car in the same visit, so there is no second trip and no second visit fee. Decline and the car comes back with its 15-day rejection sticker so you can decide on your own time. Prefer your own mechanic? We'll take it there. How is the car returned?

To your driveway or your workplace, as soon as the shop is done for same-day return or the next business day for next-day, with return photos, the new sticker, and an itemized receipt showing the $20 state fee and any approved work at cost.

Who is this for?

Anyone in Richmond whose sticker month arrives while they're busy: parents, shift workers, people without a second car, remote workers who can't lose a morning, adult children managing a parent's car, and small businesses with a few vehicles. If you can hand over a key at your door, the rest is ours.
