Where to get a Virginia state inspection in Richmond

Every option Richmond drivers have for the annual state inspection, what each one costs, when the lines are shortest, and how to skip the trip entirely.

If your sticker expires this month, you have more options in Richmond than you might think. Here is the full list, with the honest tradeoffs of each.

Your options in Richmond

Dealership service departments. Most Richmond-area dealers are licensed inspection stations. Easy if your car is already going in for service, and waiting rooms are comfortable. The tradeoff: dealers see an inspection as a chance to quote work, and their labor rates are the highest in town.

National tire and service chains. The big-brand shops along Broad Street, Midlothian Turnpike, and West End retail corridors almost all inspect. Convenient hours, predictable process. Same tradeoff as dealers: the inspection is a sales opportunity, so expect a recommendation list.

Independent garages. Richmond has dozens of licensed independents, and a good one is the best deal in town. Look for the official Virginia State Police inspection station sign near the bay door. If you already have a mechanic you trust, ask if they inspect. Many do.

The inspection fee is the same everywhere, because Virginia caps it: $20 for passenger vehicles at every licensed station in the state. Nobody in Richmond can legally charge more for the inspection itself. What varies is everything around it: your time, the repair quotes, and the markup on any work you approve.

When the lines are shortest

Stickers expire on the last day of the month printed on them, so stations get slammed in the final week of every month. Three rules of thumb:

1. Go mid-month if you can. The first three weeks are far calmer than the last one.
2. Arrive when the station opens. Inspections run first come, first served at most shops.
3. Avoid Saturday mornings. Everyone with a weekday job has the same idea.

What to bring

If it fails
