What happens if your car fails a Virginia inspection

What does the station give you when a car fails?

Two things. A rejection sticker, applied to the windshield in place of the old approval sticker (which the inspector removes and destroys at the start of every inspection, pass or fail). And a written record of the inspection listing each item that did not meet the standard. Keep the record; it is what the reinspection is checked against.

Can I drive with a rejection sticker?

Yes. The regulation is explicit that the rejection sticker "places no travel restriction on the operation of the vehicle" during its validity period. Two cautions. First, the defect itself is still a defect: an officer who sees a car operated with a burned-out headlight can write a summons for the headlight regardless of the sticker. Second, the 15 days is a hard limit; after it, the car has no valid sticker at all and the expired-sticker rules apply.

How long do I have?

Fifteen days in addition to the day of inspection. There is no extension in the regulation. If the repair will take longer than that (a back-ordered part, say), plan on a full new inspection once it's done rather than a reinspection.

Do I have to get the repairs done at the station that failed me?

No. Virginia doesn't tie the repair to the inspecting station. You can have the work done by any shop, or do it yourself for something like a wiper blade or a bulb, and then bring the car back to the original station for reinspection. The station may not condition the reinspection on having done the work there.

What can legally fail my car?

Only items in the published inspection standard (19VAC30-70): brakes, lamps, steering, suspension, tires, glass, wipers, mirrors, horn, seat belts, exhaust, fuel system, doors, hood latch, and floor pan, each with a specific threshold. Air filters, fluid flushes, alignment, a battery that still starts the car, and "inspection prep" packages are not on it and cannot cause a rejection. What does the reinspection cost, and where?

At the same station, within the 15 days, the reinspection covers only the failed items and the station may charge at most $1. You're entitled to up to two reinspections on one rejection sticker. What if I disagree with the failure?

Ask the station to show you the item against the standard; every rejection maps to a numbered section of 19VAC30-70 with a measurable threshold. If you still believe the rejection is wrong, the Virginia State Police Safety Division supervises inspection stations and takes complaints. In practice, most disputes are not about whether the item failed but about the additional work bundled into the quote, which is a separate conversation you are free to end.
