Can someone else take my car to the inspection station?

Yes. Virginia inspects the vehicle, not the owner. The station needs the car, a licensed driver to bring it in, and the $20 fee. There is no requirement that the registered owner be present, sign anything, or show ID. Whoever drives it needs a valid license, and the car needs to be insured and registered as usual. You don't need to hand over the title or the registration card.

What are my options?

A friend or family member. Free, if you can find someone with a free morning in the same week your sticker expires. They'll spend the same half day you were avoiding, and they'll be the one at the counter when the station presents its recommendation list.

A shop with a shuttle or pickup. Some dealers and larger shops offer this to existing service customers. It solves the driving; it doesn't solve the fact that the shop presenting the repair list is also the one selling the repairs.

What if it fails while you have it?

You'll know within minutes. Each failed item comes with the Virginia standard it failed, so you can see it's a real rejection and not an opinion. What do you need from me?

• An address in Richmond, Henrico, or Chesterfield where the car will be, and a phone we can text
• The keys, handed over or left in a lockbox
• A card for the visit fee; shop work is charged only after you approve it

That's the list. You don't need to be home. Many customers book a morning pickup, go to work, and find the car back in the driveway with a new sticker that evening.

My sticker has already expired. Is it too late?

No, but sooner is better. Every day on the road without a valid inspection is a separate offense under Virginia law, though an officer can't stop you solely for the sticker until the fourth month after expiration.
